Random thoughts for Thursday

I try to blog every other week while some of my colleagues are more faithful in their writing. In this week’s post, I thought I would write on stewardship (I know that is a dirty word in some churches) but received an email from a former professor of mine that linked back to his blog. Be assured that the content is of high quality but that is not the point of my ramblings today. You see I am an advocate for using technology for personal and spiritual advancement.

Dr. Ruffin was my Hebrew teacher in undergraduate studies at Belmont University. He left teaching at the university level to return to teaching at the local church level as a senior pastor. I always enjoyed his class because I learned more about my faith in my Hebrew class than just about anywhere else. Now back to my point, I received an email saying that he was looking for comments on his recent blog post. I had to read the blog. It drew me in like a moth to the flame. Now I can sit at the feet of the teacher once again through electronic means.

That is the power of this medium. Blogs should make you sharpen your thoughts and challenge you to state what you believe. Blogs allow you to give voice to concerns others are being silent on (like social justice issues). Dr. R is not the only one doing this (there are members of this blog that sponsor individual or church blogs as well) but he provides a good example for us to follow. In reading the blog entry, it seemed clear that Pastor Ruffin is trying to help is congregants grow in their understanding of scripture while challenging the rest of us as well. There is more to his blog than the entries too. He has a place where he lets you know what books he is reading (and hopefully he address why and what he is learning from them).

So what started as a post on stewardship turned into another rant on the point of the read/write web. I can’t help myself, when I see technology being used effectively, I have to tell people about it. Will you be the next one I catch? Maybe I will do stewardship next time…
