Church, congregations, and rethinking community

Here’s a site that contains some of my favorite things to talk about: congregations, systems, and design. First take some time to study the concept behind the graphic design of “this is not a church” by Steve Collins.

This is a terrific “visual metaphor” that effectively teaches a concept. Be sure to scroll the screen to take in the full impact and message of the image.

Next, visit the Network Theory Presentation page for an outline of Collin’s presentation. The outline refers to Dunbar’s rule of 150, which I alluded to in The Hidden Lives of Congregations. One of the concepts I think is important to remember is that a congregation is a type of “community of faith” and has to be understood and developed as such. Collins challenges us to consider how we may need to understand the concept of “community” related to a church (congregation).

The rest of the Small Ritual site is well worth exploring. The website design is imaginative and the articles are insightful and challenging.
