One of the teachers at the elementary school at which I was a principal would take a vacation to a different state every year. Her family’s goal was to eventually visit all fifty states and so at the school year’s end she and her husband would pack up the kids and pets and take off for the next state on their checklist.
I’m not that methodical or ambitious with my travel plans, although there are a couple of places I’d like to visit, eventually. Frankly, I don’t “vacation” well, so spending weeks living out of my suitcase, sleeping in strange beds, taking in artificially-contrived amusements and putting up with other people—and other people’s children—is not my idea of rest and relaxation.
But I have been around some. Here are the states I’ve visited, stayed at, slept over, or driven through on my way elsewhere:

Well, I’m a bit ticked that we are placing an emphasis on the quantity of states rather than the quality of one’s experiences and relationships in the states! Are we rewarding numbers here?! Ha! Couldn’t resist, Israel! A little bit of fun is a good thing, don’t you think? Besides, I have your books. Congrats, Margaret!
Sometimes sheer numbers count for something (pun intended). Witness Cal Ripken Jr. and his 2,632 consecutive game played. In other words, apparently just “showing up” a LOT counts for something if you do it enough times, regardless of the “quality of play” in any of those games. One snowflake is harmless—but enough of them in number will cause a destructive avalanche.
And, you’ve alluded in the past to the string of Sunday School perfect attendance badges some folks sport (my wife has one with a string of about 13 years of perfect attendance banners!). Some would say that showing up counts for something—even if you don’t learn anything to show for it. But, I rant…..
