Professor of Latin and Greek, A. E. Housman is, arguably, more popularly know for his poetry. His most noted poetic work is A Shropshire Lad<\/em><\/a> which includes the popular \u00ef\u00bf\u00bdTo An Athelete Dying Young.\u00ef\u00bf\u00bd More ironically, given his self-avowed atheism, some of his \u00ef\u00bf\u00bdreligious\u00ef\u00bf\u00bd poetry remain some of his most popularly collected works. His poem \u00ef\u00bf\u00bdThe Carpenter\u00ef\u00bf\u00bds Son\u00ef\u00bf\u00bd is a favorite Lenten poem.

\nThe Carpenter’s Son<\/em><\/p>\n

“Here the hangman stops his cart:
\nNow the best of friends must part.
\nFare you well, for ill fare I:
\nLive, lads, and I will die.<\/p>\n

“Oh, at home had I but stayed
\n‘Prenticed to my father’s trade,
\nHad I stuck to plane and adze,
\nI had not been lost, my lads.<\/p>\n

“Then I might have built perhaps
\nGallows-trees for other chaps,
\nNever dangled on my own,
\nHad I left but ill alone.<\/p>\n

“Now, you see, they hang me high,
\nAnd the people passing by
\nStop to shake their fists and curse;
\nSo ’tis come from ill to worse.<\/p>\n

“Here hang I, and right and left
\nTwo poor fellows hang for theft:
\nAll the same’s the luck we prove,
\nThough the midmost hangs for love.<\/p>\n

“Comrades all, that stand and gaze,
\nWalk henceforth in other ways;
\nSee my neck and save your own:
\nComrades all, leave ill alone.<\/p>\n

“Make some day a decent end,
\nShrewder fellows than your friend.
