Given that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m an insomniac that shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be a surprise. I got hooked when I saw the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popeilfamilystore.com\/ppf.html\">Pocket Fisherman<\/a> infomercial by Ronco, an early (and still popular) product from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Popeil\">Ron Popeil <\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideafinder.com\/history\/inventors\/popeil.htm\">more<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronco.com\/index.aspx\">more<\/a>). Since those early days Ron Popeil and company have shaped the infomercial phenomenon with a steady stream of products. Using a successful format for pitching products, which included the teaser, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But wait! There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Popeil has sold his inventions, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianlegacies.si.edu\/objectdescription.cfm?ID=224\">Veg-O-Matic<\/a>, Mr. Microphone, the Inside-the-Shell Egg Scrambler to the wildly successful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walmart.com\/catalog\/product.do?product_id=4127213\">Ronco Rotisserie Oven<\/a>, that last due in no small part to Ron Popeil\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s memorable pitch, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Set it and forget it!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img src='http:\/\/grace-ed.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/popeil.jpg' alt='popeil.jpg' \/><br \/>\n<strong>Ron Popeil, inventor, entrepeneur, and master pitchman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to Sunday School, most pastors seem to use the Ron Popeil approach to Christian Education, namely, the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Set it and forget it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d approach. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re happy with the fact that no matter what you do (or don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do much of), people will show up to Sunday School. Other than recruiting willing teachers (or warm bodies), equipping a room with suitable furniture, making an attendance roster, and buying curricular resource material, what else is there to Christian education in Sunday School?<\/p>\n<p>I want to tell those pastors, to quote Ron Popeil, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But wait! there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>Any educational enterprise, in whatever context, must give attention to rigorous application of educational process if it is to be effective. Mere attendance, whether in Sunday School or a college classroom does not in itself guarantee learning. Learning is a process which, in order to be effective, must be undergirded by sound educational processes. To be a legitimate educational enterprise, a Sunday School must give attention to: <\/p>\n<p><b>A philosophical foundation that answers the questions: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do we want our students to learn? <\/li>\n<li>How will we know when they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned it? <\/li>\n<li>How will we respond when they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t learn it? <\/li>\n<li>How will we respond when they do learn it? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The supervision of agents: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The process of teacher recruitment<\/li>\n<li>Providing on-going teacher training<\/li>\n<li>Development of the teaching faculty<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of teacher performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The administration of the program: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attention to sound program organization and structure<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of program effectiveness<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of program relevance<\/li>\n<li>Planning for program development (funding, resources, growth and efficiency). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pastors and church program leaders who want to provide an effective educational program that helps persons grow in faith must function as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153real\u00e2\u20ac\u009d educators. They must understand and practice the educational processes that make for an authentic educational enterprise and not merely a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pretend school\u00e2\u20ac\u009d approach of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Set it and forget it!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p><img src='http:\/\/grace-ed.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/galindobanner3.jpg' alt='galindobanner3.jpg' \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a fan of late night infomercials.
