{"id":1504,"date":"2009-05-05T00:07:13","date_gmt":"2009-05-05T04:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/grace-ed.org\/blog\/?p=1504"},"modified":"2009-05-05T09:04:12","modified_gmt":"2009-05-05T13:04:12","slug":"the-brain-and-learning-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/grace-ed.org\/blog\/archives\/1504","title":{"rendered":"The Brain and Learning 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some years ago I took a seminar with communication guru <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardtufte.com\/tufte\/\">Edwin Tufte.<\/a>  He concluded his seminar on communication and design with a film of a magician\u2019s performance. The short film was a clever and effective way to demonstrate some of the principles of how the brain \u201csees\u201d and interprets \u201cinformation.\u201d More specifically, it demonstrated how understanding these principles of perception, and applying them for their purpose, magicians are able to fool the brain through intentional misdirection, deception, and obfuscation. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When we do not understand how the brain learns we run the risk of engaging in all three, effectively blocking a learner\u2019s ability to learn. The insight for teachers, communicators, and educators is that we should do the opposite of what a magician does. Vagueness, lack of clarity, and confusion are the greatest obstacles to learning. <\/p>\n<p>Check out the article titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/science\/discoveries\/magazine\/17-05\/ff_neuroscienceofmagic?currentPage=all\">Magic and the Brain<\/a>: Teller Reveals the Neuroscience of Illusion\u201d in Wired magazine 17.05. It offers some fun and fascinating insights on the brain and perception from Teller (from the Penn &#038; Teller duo). <\/p>\n<p>Here is an excerpt: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our brains don&#8217;t see everything\u2014the world is too big, too full of stimuli. So the brain takes shortcuts, constructing a picture of reality with relatively simple algorithms for what things are supposed to look like. Magicians capitalize on those rules. &#8220;Every time you perform a magic trick, you&#8217;re engaging in experimental psychology,&#8221; Teller says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One important concept about teaching we\u2019ll be focusing on (no pun intended) in my May term course on instruction is \u201cattention\u201d and its role in learning. Here\u2019s a blurb on attention from the article: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Attention, it turns out, is like a spotlight. When it&#8217;s focused on something, we become oblivious to even obvious changes outside its narrow beam. What magicians do, essentially, is misdirect\u2014pivot that spotlight toward the wrong place at the right time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one terrific illusion by an art student: <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/lancashire\/8030766.stm\">invisible car. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the way, if Edward Tufte\u2019s seminars ever come near your home town, go see him.
