The Litany of the Dark People<\/em><\/p>\n

Our flesh that was a battleground
\nShows now the morning-break;
\nThe ancient deities are drowned
\nFor they eternal sake.
\nNow that the past is left behind,
\nFling wide the garment’s hem
\nTo Keep us one with Thee in mind,
\nThou Christ of Bethlehem.<\/p>\n

The thorny wreath may ridge our brow,
\nThe spear may mar our side,
\nAnd on white wood from a scented bough
\nWe may be crucified;
\nYet no assaults the old gods make
\nUpon our agony
\nShall swerve our footsteps from the wake
\nOf Thine toward Calvary.<\/p>\n

And if we hunger now and thirst,
\nGrant our withholders may,
\nWhen heaven’s constellations burst
\nUpon Thy crowning day,
\nBe fed by us, and given to see
\nThy mercy in our eyes,
\nWhen Bethlehem and Calvary
\nAre merged in Paradise.<\/p>\n
