A must see

The recent movie “Pan’s Labyrinth” takes place after the Spanish Civil War when the government is working hard to rid the country of any resistance. A young girl, Ofelia, finds herself in the middle of this conflict as her new step-father is a captain for the Spanish government. As Ofelia and her mother join her new step-father in another town, strange things begin to happen to Ofelia and, she finds her life intertwining with that of mythical creatures. Throughout the movie, you are left wondering if this other world is real or is it just in her head.

The movie is dark, but it one worth watching for those who like to watch movies that have more than meets the eye and leaves you reflecting on various aspects for some time later. Good versus evil, what is real and what is not, and how people cope with violence are just of few of the themes present in this award winning movie. Not to mention that it is a superb example of good story telling, character development, and cinematography – winning 3 academy awards for Best Cinematography, Art Direction, and Make-up.

You can rent it from your local Blockbuster.

Happy viewing!

You may enjoy also Mirror Mask, a film worth watching. Classic story with creative interpretation, though a too abrupt ending, I thought.

The visual style is imaginative, creative, and nothing short of amazing.
